🧬 The History of the Breed
Maine Coons are one of the oldest natural cat breeds in North America, with roots tracing back to the state of Maine—where they’ve even been named the official state cat. These gentle giants are believed to have descended from long-haired cats brought to New England by sailors, evolving over time to survive harsh winters with thick coats, tufted paws, and muscular builds.
While legends tie them to Marie Antoinette’s royal cats or even Viking ship cats, what we know for sure is that Maine Coons are tough, loving, and deeply loyal companions with a long and fascinating history.

🐱 The Maine Coon Look
At Sunkissed Whiskers, we specialize in the classic Maine Coon look: powerful, elegant, and wild. Some standout features of the breed include:
• Long, luxurious, water-resistant coats
• Large, expressive eyes and lynx-tipped ears
• Tufted paws and long, bushy tails
• A lion-like ruff around the neck
Males typically weigh 13–18+ lbs, and females 8–14 lbs. Each of our kittens has their own unique charm and personality, but all carry that unmistakable Maine Coon presence.

💛 Temperament: Gentle Giants
What truly sets Maine Coons apart is their personality. These cats are famously gentle, intelligent, and social. They’re often described as dog-like because of their loyalty, playfulness, and love for following their humans around the house. Many enjoy water, carry on conversations in chirps and trills, and remain playful well into adulthood.
They’re wonderful with children, other cats, and dogs. In fact, our kittens are raised right in our home around our own children, a large Rottweiler, and mini dachshunds. This early socialization helps them become confident, well-adjusted, and friendly family companions.

🧼 Care & Grooming
Despite their long hair, Maine Coons have coats that are surprisingly low-maintenance. A good brushing 1–2 times a week is usually all they need to stay tangle-free.
To keep them happy and healthy, we also recommend:
• A high-quality, high-protein diet
• Regular nail trimming and ear checks
• Lots of play, climbing, and enrichment—Maine Coons love mental stimulation

• Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM)
• Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA)
• Hip Dysplasia
